14 year old Kareem was injured when a shell was fired close to where he was standing. His leg became infected and he was in urgent need of treatment but on May 7th, when he was due to be evacuated to Egypt, the border was closed. In spite of pleas from his mother to save his leg the surgeon had no option but to perform an amputation. Afterwards Kareem suffered from depression and became severely malnourished.  Thanks to help from Sayed, our local nurse, we were able to ensure he had the nutrition and round the clock care he needed in order to survive and after months of waiting for the border to open, we were able to get permission for him to leave through Kerem Shalom and he and his mother and siblings were flown to the UAE.

ZEINA

Two year old Zeina suffered life changing injuries when she ran to her mother during an air strike and was severely burned when the soup her mother was holding was spilled over her daughter.  She was offered treatment at a hospital in Germany but after 3 months waiting for her visa, the German Government wasn't able to help after all. The Italian Government stepped in and finally in August she crossed the border to Egypt with her mother and siblings and they flew to Venice in September.  See more
